Drag Racing - UAE Style

This is the second year for the Arab Run car event.

Last year we went and it was quite casual and basically gave you a look at the parked cars.

This year the organizers arranged it to run thru the streets of Dubai, over to Fujairah for lunch, and then the participants could go to Emirates Motorplex in Umm Al Quwain to race on the drag strip.

For me, going to the Motorplex evoked old memories of stock car racing (Brockville) and drag racing (Cayuga) from my youth, however the cars were slightly different this time.

There were Bugatti, Ferraris, Porsches, Mercedes, Lamborghinis, BMWs, plus the lower end cars like Ford GT, Charger SRT8, Viper and Corvettes.

They paired off in a mixture of likely/unlikely that made for interesting viewing, and added to the fact these were street legal cars, mainly with inexperienced drivers for this type of thing.

The main matchup was between the Bugatti Veyron and the Maclaren SLR. Two 12 cylinder cars with a combined value of over $1.5 million. The Bugatti won, crossing the line in just over 11 seconds, and going from 0 to 224 km/hr in a quarter mile.

The surprise of the night was a Yamaha super bike (no photo unfortunately) that beat the Ferrari, and crossed the line at 209 km/hr at under 12 seconds.

The closest race was the Charger SRT8 ($35K) versus the Ferrari ($140K). The Ferrari edged out the Charger by a 10th of a second.

All in all an entertaining evening of drag racing, UAE style.

I don't think I have a competitive bone in my body. It's a good thing gas is cheap there. Your night video turned out well.

Ruth: The night video is from Alex's mobile phone, quite a good Nokia.
Competition makes the world go round.

Becka: Save your pennies and come on over.

Spokane has an old abandoned track that was just bought by the city. After they clean it up the soil (it is contaminated with lead and some other chemicals) they are going to rebuild the track.

We have a really big street racing problem in Spokane and many people feel if we give the kids a place to race it will help the problem. Whether it does or not (I feel it will help) I do look forward to having a track in Spokane.

Not that we will have cares that are that nice racing on it...
