Muscat Trip Part Deux

The adventures of Sandland Son and his friends in Oman conclude.
----------------------------------------

So we left off just as the boys and I were about to paint the town of Muscat red.

Unfortunately you are not allowed to take pictures in a lot of the bars as it is illegal for Muslims to drink; obviously most don’t want their drunken grids on the internet. Furthermore this is a “family-friendly” blog so I can’t post our exploits in any case.

The nightlife of Oman can be summed up in one word: rubbish. The bars are populated with a mixture of locals nursing their beer and ogling the dancing girls, fat expats ogling the hookers, and hookers ogling the wallets of the expats.

That being said we are professionals at finding the underground scene, and I have provided this montage which basically sums up the tone of our night.

We got up in the morning without too much trouble and decide to forgo visiting another mosque in favour of the beach. We came across a deserted beach and spent some time exploring the ancient houses dotted along the coast-line:

Then off to the beach!

While we were catching rays, a crusty old Omani fisherman drifted ashore in his boat and asked us if we wanted a tour. After paying him a handsome fee and ascertaining that he was not kidnapping us to work in his private harem, we set off:

As you can see, Sjoerd is going for another “look”, the “I’m so damn sexy I don’t need a shirt” look. He will pay for that later as I had left my sunscreen on the beach…

We left it to Sjoerd to decipher what the man was telling us but to no avail. I assured him that the fisherman was simply showing us where they drowned foreigners.

Joking aside, our guide took us to a private beach on a tiny island.

The water was perfectly clear and the sand was brilliant white.

By then it was time to head back home to dusty RAK:

Oman is a very beautiful country and while not the richest of the GCC countries, has a lower unemployment rate than all of them and through their investment in infrastructure has created a very good quality of life. I would definitely consider relocating there, as long as they let me open a bar.

The local bar at Golden Oasis, the bar at the Crowne Plaza, and then down to the Intercontinental (Trader Vic's and whatever the other one is called with the free pool tables)
